What is stress?

There are innumerable definitions of stress in psychology journals, medical papers and online articles. It is amazing that in spite of all our advancements in science, medicine and technology, we have not yet precisely defined what stress is.

Most explanations simply rephrase the symptoms of stress without ever getting to the root of the problem. The result is we just keep going in circles, ending up exactly where we started. How can we solve a problem if we have not even defined it accurately?

Now, let us once and for all clear out the confusion and define what stress is.

First and foremost, stress is not a physical phenomenon; it is 100% mental in nature. Although we experience the symptoms of stress in our body, the root cause of stress is always in the mind.

At its most fundamental level, stress is simply a phenomenon of our mind racing faster than normal due to fear, while our body is struggling to catch up. Just pause for a moment and reflect on this; can you be in stress when you are not in fear?

The primary cause of stress is fear. This fear can be real, imagined or perceived. Unless we learn how to acknowledge, accept and handle our fears, we will not be able to go beyond stress fully.

How to go beyond stress:

There are two approaches we can take to deal with stress: One is immediate and short-term treatment of the symptoms of stress in order to find quick relief. The other is finding a long-term permanent solution by addressing the root cause of stress.

Now, let’s look at 10 quick and easy ways to effectively deal with the symptoms of stress:

1) Be alert and aware of the changes in breathing, body temperature, perspiration etc. to quickly identify a stressful situation. Make a conscious choice to step away from the situation.

2) Stop and take 10 slow and deep breaths by keeping your entire focus on the breath.

3) Pay close attention to the language of the conversation in your mind during a stressful situation. Make a conscious effort to slow down your rate of speech.

4) Identify persistent and recurring problems that are inducing stress, and try to solve these problems.

5) Take regular breaks during work and try to divert your mind away from work-related conversations during a break.

6) Do not give more than necessary importance to your financial position. Excessive dependence on “the idea of wealth” can cause unnecessary stress.

7) Differentiate between actions that you can control and situations that are beyond your control. Learn to let go of things that are beyond your control.

8) Practice love, compassion and forgiveness. Do not harbor negative feelings of anger, resentment or jealousy.

9) Your emotional state affects your thought process, and this in turn affects your stress levels. Learn to identify and control your different emotional states.

10) Learn to be mindful of your actions throughout the day. Be aware of changing situations, emotions and thought processes. This will help you to identify stressful situations early.

Dealing with immediate symptoms of stress will only provide short-term relief. To be able to reduce your stress levels on a longer run and to eventually go beyond stress, you have to take a more scientific and systematic long-term approach.

To help you go beyond stress permanently, we have designed a comprehensive online program with all the necessary resources, tools and guidance. “Inner-Revolution” is one of the most effective online programs designed to overcome stress fully.

Your spouse or roommate leaves their wet bath towel on the floor AGAIN. How do you react?

You see an unrecognized $200 charge on your credit card. What is your immediate reaction?

You had to wait for longer than usual while at a restaurant. How do you react?

Do you enjoy your job?

Do you have any friends (real friends!) that you spend time with?

How often do you watch mainstream media news?

You are working on a project and you are not happy with the result. What do you do?

Do you have trouble falling asleep at night?

How Stressed Are You?
You are in the green - Low Stress

Congratulations, you’re one easy-going person! Whatever it is that you are doing to balance your work and personal life seems to be working for you. There’s always something to strive for, so if you’re not already doing this, incorporating a daily routine of mindfulness and quiet time opens up a whole new world of possibilities for you. You can also do extraordinarily well to help a few people deal with their daily stress. You can sure offer a few suggestions on how to handle stressful situations. Regular mindfulness can find a perfect match in you.
You are in the yellow - Moderate Stress

Not bad, you are managing your stress well. In today’s world, moderate stress is an accomplishment! You could move your stress level from moderate to "no stress" by adding a daily routine of mindfulness and quiet time. Being "in the moment" is key to reducing stress in your life. By being more conscious of all your daily activities, you can gain more control over your emotions. You do get affected easily by what is happening around you. You can change this by becomming more aware.
You are in the red - Severe Stress

Wow, you need to slow down and breathe! Worrying about what might happen in the future is a waste of energy and worrying about what has already happened is a waste of time. You’ve got to give your mind a break or it will break you. Try implementing a daily routine of mindfulness and relaxation. It will remind you to be in the moment, and with regular practice it will change the way you react to situations. You react way too impulsively and quickly to situations. It is very easy for external circumstances to influence you negatively. The more you allow your external circumstances to control your state of mind, the easier it is for you to get stressed. Being mindful and taking breaks often will make a world of difference. We strongly recommend you to explore our "Inner-Revolution" online program.

Inner-Revolution Online Program

Can you imagine never brushing your teeth? I bet you can’t! This is because you have been taught how important it is to keep your mouth clean. Throughout our lives we are taught how to walk, talk, eat, and take care of our bodies, but nobody has ever taught us how to take care of our minds. We are not taught how to deal with negative emotions such as stress, anger, fear, or rejection.

Our bodies instinctively know when to rest, but our minds run constantly–no one has taught us how to get a break from the constant barrage of thoughts generated by our minds. Our minds are the teeth that have never been brushed.

“Inner-Revolution” online program is a unique endeavor to provide the best possible resources for individual transformation. This revolutionary program is the result of years of wisdom distilled from the Inner Revolution team. Subjects including philosophy, psychology, spirituality, religion, science, arts and language have been explored and utilized to offer simple, effective and practical solutions to deal with life.
